Having studied in Kokora – a small town in the west of the country – but being oriented toward commercial marketing, Tian wrote to express her desire to move the school to the city and practice in a more dynamic environment.

Learning without hierarchy

Finns don’t naturally value grades, so diplomas don’t include academic grades or GPAs, Tien says.

“It’s very difficult to get a high grade, only four, and it takes a miracle, a genius, to get a five. In Project 3, students split into teams to work for a month to find solutions to real problems from the company. Through this program, students learn and work in a place where companies welcome new ideas while maintaining good relations with the university – the region specializes in scientific research for companies.

After almost two years of study, My Tien has seen and heard about the mandatory master’s degree for teachers in Finland (not to mention the many rounds of exams, approvals and training required by the Ministry of Education).
